{"id":747,"date":"2016-09-19T13:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T20:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.171.78.101\/wordpress\/?p=747"},"modified":"2016-09-19T12:57:06","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T19:57:06","slug":"sailing-trivia-fathom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/sailing-trivia\/sailing-trivia-fathom\/","title":{"rendered":"Sailing Trivia &#8211; Fathom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Tradewinds Instructor Ian Joseph<\/p>\n<p>Although a fathom is now a nautical unit of length equal to six feet, it was once defined by an act of the British Parliament as &#8220;the length of a man&#8217;s arms around the object of his affections.&#8221; The word derives from the Old English Faethm, which means &#8220;embracing arms.&#8221; A fathom (abbreviation: ftm) = 1.8288 meters, is a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Units_of_measurement\">unit<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Length\">length<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imperial_unit\">imperial<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_customary_units\">U.S. customary<\/a> systems, used especially for measuring the depth of water. There are two <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yard\">yards<\/a> (6 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foot_%28length%29\">feet<\/a>) in an imperial or U.S. fathom. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fathom#cite_note-britannica11-0\">1<\/a>] Originally based on the distance between the man&#8217;s outstretched arms, the size of a fathom has varied slightly depending on whether it was defined as a thousandth of an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nautical_mile\">(Admiralty) nautical mile<\/a> or as a multiple of the imperial <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yard\">yard<\/a>.
