It\u2019s like learning a silly secret language that an exclusive club made up just to befuddle outsiders, or at least that\u2019s what <em>I <\/em>like about it. But sometimes it seems as though the sailing wizards have just gone too far. What follows are mariners\u2019 words that have two or more meanings with little or nothing in common. Why? Just because. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/52273987783_667b82ac41_w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/52273987783_667b82ac41_w.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/52273987783_667b82ac41_w.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/52273987783_667b82ac41_w-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Veer\n<\/em>(vb.):\n(1) Of the wind, to turn clockwise, or when steering, to change course, often\nby spacing out; (2) To let out anchor rode, particularly when you believe that\nusing fancy words will disguise the fact that you have no idea what you\u2019re\ndoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bight\n<\/em>(n.):\n(1) The middle of a line, where you have to learn special ways to tie knots\nlike clove hitches and bowlines that you thought you already knew; (2) A\nconcave stretch of shoreline, not deep enough to have its own name like those haughty\ncoves and bays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Foot<\/em>\n(vb.): (1) To sail slightly further off the wind than a close-hauled course to\nincrease speed; (n.) (2) The bottom edge of a sail; (3) The thing at the end of\nyour leg, useful for many seamanlike tasks like kicking the windlass to get it started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fetch\n<\/em>(vb.):\n(1) To sail to a point upwind without having to tack; (2) To \u201cfetch up\u201d means\nto come to a stop, usually on a reef (see below); (n.) (3) The distance over\nthe water that a particular wind blows, generating waves. I\u2019m not even counting\nwhat dogs do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Reef\n<\/em>(n.):\nA shallow shelf of rock or coral that sooner or later you\u2019re going to hit; (2)\nThe bottom part of the sail taken in when shortening down, although on a square\nsail this is the <em>top<\/em> of the sail, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Point<\/em>\n(vb.): (1) To taper the end of a rope; (2) To sail close to the wind, as in\n\u201cshe points well\u201d; (n.) (3) Any one of several courses relative to the wind, as\nin \u201cpoint of sail,\u201d; (4) An area of land projecting from the coastline; (5) A\n32<sup>nd<\/sup> part of the compass card equivalent to 11 degrees, 15 minutes. Are\nthese five different things, or what? Couldn\u2019t we have five different words?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And\nthe winner is:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Westerly\n<\/em>(adj.):(1) Of wind, blowing from the\nwest; but (2) Of current, setting towards the west. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You\u2019ve <em>got<\/em> to be kidding.
