{"id":1049,"date":"2014-06-23T11:21:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-23T18:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.171.78.101\/wordpress\/?p=1049"},"modified":"2014-06-23T11:21:50","modified_gmt":"2014-06-23T18:21:50","slug":"charter-in-the-san-juans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/general\/charter-in-the-san-juans\/","title":{"rendered":"Charter in the San Juans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Tradewinds member Peter D.<\/p>\n<p>Hi Matt!<\/p>\n<p>We chartered a Jeanneau 45 for 10 days from San Juan Sailing in Bellingham. \u00a0That company just gets better every time. \u00a0I know that you&#8217;ve worked with Roger Van Dyken on your own trips. \u00a0He runs a smooth operation.<\/p>\n<p>This was a guy-trip (our patient wives stayed home). \u00a0It&#8217;s the year we all turn 65 years old. \u00a0We all graduated together from Saint Mary\u2019s College (over the hill in Moraga) in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>As we left Bellingham on Wednesday May 26, I hoisted the TWSC burgee and we were off to Shallow Bay (Sucia Island) for our first overnight. \u00a0We were on mooring balls at Shallow Bay, Prevost Harbor (Stuart Island), and the cove at the back-door of Butchart Gardens. \u00a0We anchored in Port Browning (South Pender Island, BC), Sidney Spit (Sidney Island, BC), Watmaugh Bay (Lopez Island), and Inati Bay (Lummi Island). \u00a0We were side-tied at the public wharf at Ganges (Saltspring Island, BC) and at Friday Harbor (San Juan Island).<\/p>\n<p>The TWSC\/ASA anchoring and mooring class gave me the confidence and skills I needed to put my bow (and stern) exactly where I wanted. \u00a0And my line handling crew seemed grateful! \u00a0This charter was my first experience using a bow thruster and it was really helpful in tight spots (e.g., turning around inside the Friday Harbor breakwater &amp; getting away from the Bellingham marina\u2019s pump-out facility).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1050\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1050\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1050\" src=\"https:\/\/tradewindssailing.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Leaving Port Browning, South Pender Island, BC.
