Sailing School
Basic Keelboat Youth (BKY - TW 101)
Learn to sail in only 3 days
Prerequisites
None
Description
There are two differences between this course and ASA 101 Basic Keelboat:
- The ASA certificate is not issued for this course
- The only adult on the boat will be your instructor
The course outline is identical to the Basic Keelboat course. You will learn to “sail a boat of about 20 feet in length in light to moderate wind and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision.” Instructors are carefully selected for their patience and ability to work with younger students. Except for a small amount of classroom time, this is an active course that is taught aboard your vessel. It’s “learn by doing”—with a healthy dose of fun.
Responsibility and freedom are part of able seamanship. The responsibility for the well-being of your crew and vessel is sobering, and the skipper’s responsibility is absolute: If something goes amiss, all eyes go to the skipper. If it was easy, anybody could do it
However, if sailing wasn’t fun, we wouldn’t do it. The ability to control your vessel is exhilarating, a bit of salt spray on your face is exciting, and knowing how to competently handle worsening conditions feels pretty darned cool. Sailing is a lifetime skill that will lead to many interesting opportunities. Besides learning sailing skills, you also may find new appreciation for the exercise of leadership and authority, and the enduring satisfaction of a job well done.
At the end of the course, you will have earned the most important credential of all: the right to call yourself a sailor.
What Boats are Used
