Practical Skills Challenge-in

Experienced sailors can challenge our club Fleet level policy or challenge an ASA course level.

A challenge-in requires first taking the written ASA test for your challenge level. Then, your skills are evaluated on-the-water. A challenge-in usually takes 4 hour.

If you want ASA certification for your challenge-in level, the review costs $300.00. Without certification, a challenge-in costs $200. The cost includes ASA textbooks for study, instructor, and boat.

If you are not earnestly confident that you can perform all of the practical skill requirements with a score of at least 90%, you must take a course or a private lesson to improve and refine your skills.

Challenge-in sailors must perform the skills for the level that they are challenging with competence and ease. To challenge the ASA Bareboat level requires successful demonstration of these skills:

  • tight quarters maneuvering and challenging docking
  • reefing
  • coastal navigation
  • all points of sail with near perfect sail setting and steerage
  • sail shape and control
  • controlled jibing
  • tacking
  • anchoring
  • heave to in light and heavy winds
  • man overboard, both figure eight and quick stop
  • proper sail setup and take down
  • and more...

The purpose of the Practical Check-out is to assess the sailor's ability to competently and safely handle a sailboat, both under sail and power under all wind and sea conditions with confidence, precision and ease. Knowing the correct action in a given situation, communicating clearly to the crew what is expected and performing the maneuver with precision and confidence are also critical components of the sailor's boat handling abilities.
